Canadian Made Avon Of Belleville Jewelry - not to be confused with Avon Cosmetics Jewelry

Abe Mazer (of Mazer / Jomaz family fame) opened the Avon of Belleville jewelry plant in Canada in 1945, producing jewelry under the AVON trademark. Marcel Boucher, who had worked for the Mazer Brothers in the U.S. during the 1930s, apparently later contracted Abe to produce his designs at the Belleville Plant.

Boucher designs produced during this period are often stamped with the Avon mark, sometimes with his signature 4-digit code, sometimes not.   In 1971, the plant underwent a change of name and ownership, and here's where the history gets fuzzy.

Some say the plant was sold to Avon Canada Ltd., the offshoot of the California Perfume (Avon Cosmetics) Company in 1971, while another version suggests the Avon of Belleville plant became Joel Jewellers, operated by Abe's son, Joel, after a legal battle with Avon Cosmetics over the Avon name.  Perhaps it is just an interesting coincidence that Avon (the perfume company) first introduced fashion jewellery into its line in 1971.
